The Terai Threshold, Extended

A full day at leisure in Delhi before the run east to the Terai, built in deliberately so an unpredictable international arrival never costs a day in the field. Wander Chandni Chowk, or simply rest. Tomorrow we drive into the deep swamp forests of Dudhwa.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Gear Calibration: Before the wilderness circuit begins, this is your last day with soft lighting and stable Wi-Fi. Use it to calibrate - format memory cards, test long lenses against a static subject (the sandstone jaalis of Humayun's Tomb work well for focus-tracking practice), and pack the day bag you'll actually carry in the field. If jet lag allows, the diffused midday light in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk rewards street photography - high ISO tolerance over precision, since the frame is about density and motion, not the surgical detail the parks will demand."

Valmiki National Park

The Indo-Nepal Frontier

A long private transfer south and east, skirting the Indo-Nepal border through Balrampur and Gorakhpur before crossing into Bihar's West Champaran district (approx. 300km, 7-8 hrs). The open Terai grasslands of Dudhwa give way to the forested Someshwar hills of Valmiki, India's least-visited tiger reserve and the country's gateway to Nepal's own Chitwan-Parsa corridor.

Naturalist's Strategy "Valmiki is humid. Keep your lenses in a dry-bag to prevent fogging when moving from the AC vehicle to the forest."
