The City of Joy, Unhurried

A full day at leisure in Kolkata, built in deliberately so an unpredictable international arrival never costs a day in the delta. Visit the Victoria Memorial and the Indian Museum, or simply rest. Tomorrow we drive to the edge of the mangroves, toward the Sundarbans.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Light Before the Delta: Kolkata's colonial-era architecture - the Victoria Memorial's white marble, the wrought-iron verandas of the Esplanade - is a useful dry run for the tonal range you'll need in the Sundarbans, where light is flat and diffused under mangrove canopy. A private drive to the edge of the delta at Gadkhali. We board our private luxury houseboat. As we drift into the Sajnekhali range, we begin scanning the mud-banks for fresh silt-tracks.

The Creek Stealth

Sundarbans to Kolkata

The Urban Return

Depart the lodge after breakfast for the return journey to Kolkata - a combination of boat transfer out of the delta and a 2.5-4 hour road transfer, arriving in the city by early-to-mid afternoon. Guests with an evening flight have time for a short heritage walk through the colonial district before the private chauffeur transfer to Kolkata International (CCU); for earlier departures, the transfer to the airport follows directly on arrival in the city.
