The Himalayan Stag Trail

8 Days / 7 Nights

In search of the critically endangered Hangul in the stunning Alpine valley of Dachigam. Set against the backdrop of the Zabarwan Range, this is a journey into the last remaining habitat of the Kashmir Stag during the high-tension rutting season.

The Day-by-Day Itinerary

01
Arrival Delhi

The Alpine Hub

Arrival in Delhi. Technical briefing on the Hangul (Himalayan Stag) ecology and the "Alpine Stalking" protocol. We check our gear for mountain light.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Colonial Geometry: Focus on the 'Lutyens Grid.' The intersection of sandstone and green-canopy requires an ND filter to balance the bright Delhi sky against the deep shadows of the ancient Neem trees."

The Morning Ritual

Orientation over hand-pressed Nilgiri coffee.

The Culinary Experience

Private manor welcome dinner.

02
Orientation & Strategy

Acclimatizing in Delhi

A day held open in the capital before the flight to Kashmir, absorbing any delay from an international arrival. Visit Humayun's Tomb, or simply rest ahead of the altitude change. Tomorrow we fly north toward the Valley of Saints.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Gear Calibration: Before the wilderness circuit begins, this is your last day with soft lighting and stable Wi-Fi. Use it to calibrate - format memory cards, test long lenses against a static subject (the sandstone jaalis of Humayun's Tomb work well for focus-tracking practice), and pack the day bag you'll actually carry in the field. If jet lag allows, the diffused midday light in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk rewards street photography - high ISO tolerance over precision, since the frame is about density and motion, not the surgical detail the parks will demand."

The Morning Ritual

A slow start - coffee on the terrace, unhurried, with nowhere to be before mid-morning.

The Culinary Experience

An easy, low-key dinner near the hotel - the last multi-cuisine city menu before the itinerary's food turns regional and lodge-based.

03
Delhi to Srinagar

The Valley of Saints

Flight to Srinagar. Afternoon "Shikara" drift on Dal Lake to observe the aquatic birdlife before heading toward the mountain sanctuary.

The Morning Ritual

Lakeside birding orientation.

The Culinary Experience

Wazwan "Roganjosh" tasting.

04
Lower Range Patrol

The Silence of Dachigam

First entry into the sanctuary. We move on foot with expert trackers, scanning the riverine forest for the critically endangered Hangul.

The Morning Ritual

Kashmiri Kahwa over a ridge sweep.

The Culinary Experience

Traditional "Haakh" and rice.

05
Upper Dachigam

The High Ridge Stalk

A strenuous but rewarding day. We push toward the higher ridges where the large stags congregate during the rutting season.

Naturalist's Strategy "The "Rutting Call": During the autumn rut, the stags are focused on territory. Stay downwind and move only when the stag is "bellowing"—the sound will mask your footsteps on the dry leaves."

The Morning Ritual

Pre-dawn stalking training.

The Culinary Experience

Field-side trout grill.

06
Dachigam Cliffs

The Leopard of the Rocks

While the stag is our focus, today we scan the rocky outcrops for the Himalayan Black Bear and the common leopard that shadows the deer herds.

The Morning Ritual

Cliff-side spotting with Swarovski optics.

The Culinary Experience

Kashmiri "Noon Chai" on the trail.

07
Srinagar to Delhi

The Golden Reflection

A final morning in the sanctuary, capturing the golden autumn foliage before our return flight to the capital.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Portfolio Synthesis: The final debrief is a study in metadata. Review your expedition catalog to find the 'Signature Shot'—the one frame that captures the spirit of the journey. Check for sensor dust and file integrity before the final transition."

The Morning Ritual

Final ridge meditation.

The Culinary Experience

Farewell Wazwan banquet.

08
Departure Delhi

The Global Gate

Final de-brief and cataloging in Delhi before your international departure from New Delhi (DEL).

Signature de-brief and gift pack.

The Culinary Experience
