The Lutyens Prelude

Arrival at New Delhi (DEL). Briefing at our private residency on the history of Project Barasingha. We review the geological differences between the hard-ground and swamp-dwelling habitats.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Sandstone Saturation: At sunset, the Dholpur sandstone of Lutyens' Delhi absorbs the infrared spectrum. Switch to 'Cloudy' White Balance to emphasize the deep ochre tones. The goal is to capture the silhouette of the Black Kites against the 'Imperial Orange' sky."

Delhi at Leisure

A full day at leisure in the capital before the flight to Central India, built in deliberately to absorb an unpredictable international arrival. Visit India Gate, or simply rest. Tomorrow we fly toward the hard-ground swamp deer of Kanha.

Naturalist's Strategy "The Gear Calibration: Before the wilderness circuit begins, this is your last day with soft lighting and stable Wi-Fi. Use it to calibrate - format memory cards, test long lenses against a static subject (the sandstone jaalis of Humayun's Tomb work well for focus-tracking practice), and pack the day bag you'll actually carry in the field. If jet lag allows, the diffused midday light in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk rewards street photography - high ISO tolerance over precision, since the frame is about density and motion, not the surgical detail the parks will demand."

Morning flight to Central India and transfer to the Kanha meadows. We arrive in time for the evening patrol, looking for the hard-ground Barasingha herds as they graze in the iconic open grasslands.

Full day in the Kanha core. We focus on the mating rituals and the social structure of the hard-ground herds. The contrast of the golden deer against the deep green Sal forest provides a classic photographic canvas.

The Swamp-Deer Vigil

Deep entry into the swampy grasslands of Dudhwa. We track the sub-species that has adapted to live in standing water. We watch the herds as they navigate the tall "Elephant Grass" and the deep "Tals" (lakes).

Naturalist's Strategy "The Tall-Grass Horizon: In the 10ft elephant grass, vision is a luxury. Listen for the 'Vacuum'—the distinct sound of Barasingha (Swamp Deer) grazing in the wet marsh. Tigers here are 'Sit-and-Wait' specialists; look for the flick of a white-tipped ear above the grass-line during the golden hour."
